Getting started / ConnectingMenu

Connecting

Connection settings for SFTP, FTPS and FTP clients.

Every server has its own ports. You’ll find the host and ports on the server’s Overview tab. The examples below use host nbg1.cloudfile.dev, SFTP port 22000 and FTP port 22001.

Command line

# SFTP with a password
sftp -P 22000 [email protected]

# SFTP with an SSH key
sftp -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 -P 22000 [email protected]

With curl (built with SSH support) or lftp you can script transfers:

lftp -u acme sftp://nbg1.cloudfile.dev:22000 -e "put report.csv; bye"

FileZilla

  1. Open File → Site Manager and click New site.
  2. Set Protocol to SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol.
  3. Enter the host and the SFTP port.
  4. Set Logon Type to Normal and enter the username and password. For key login choose Key file.

WinSCP and Cyberduck

Choose SFTP, then enter the host, port, username and password or private key. Both clients remember the server’s host key after the first connection.

FTPS and FTP

Use the FTP port. For FTPS choose explicit FTP over TLS (FTPES); the server presents a trusted certificate for its host name. Clients connect in passive mode. Each server has its own range of passive ports, which is configured automatically.

Plain FTP sends passwords unencrypted. Only enable it on a server for legacy systems that can’t use SFTP or FTPS. You can switch protocols on the server’s Settings tab.

Troubleshooting

  • Connection refused: check that the protocol is enabled for the server and that you’re using that protocol’s port.
  • Permission denied: check the login method. A user set to SSH key can’t log in with a password.
  • Too many failed logins: clients that repeatedly fail to authenticate are blocked for a while. Wait and try again with the correct credentials.
