Use case

Scan-to-FTP and camera uploads, straight to the cloud

Point scanners, cameras and NAS boxes at a cloud FTP server instead of a PC under the desk.

The problem. Sound familiar?

  • Scanners, multifunction printers and IP cameras can only push files over FTP or SFTP.

  • The office PC that runs the FTP server for them is a security hole and goes down with every update.

  • Files stuck on a local box are hard to reach from anywhere else.

How it works with CloudFile, in about a minute.

  1. Step 1

    Create a server

Choose a region close to your devices.

    office-scans ● running nbg1.cloudfile.dev
  2. Step 2

    One login per device

Give each scanner or camera its own user and folder, with a quota so nothing fills up.

    scanner-2f FTP /home/scanner-2f 5 GB
  3. Step 3

    Use the files anywhere

Browse them in the web file manager, get an email per scan, or forward them to your app with a webhook.

    upload scanner-2f /scan_0193.pdf ✉ office@

What you get, and nothing you have to run.

  • FTP, FTPS, SFTP and WebDAV

Plain FTP for older devices, FTPS or SFTP for anything that supports encryption, and WebDAV over HTTPS for NAS boxes and desktops. Works with any device that lets you set the host and port.

  • A folder per device

Each device logs in as its own user, so a compromised camera can't touch the scanner's files.

  • Quotas

Cap storage per device so a misconfigured camera can't eat the whole plan.

  • Notifications

An email per scan, or a webhook into your document workflow.

  • Brute-force protection

Clients that guess passwords are banned automatically.

  • EU storage

Files sit in S3-compatible storage in the EU, or in your own bucket with your own encryption keys.

Questions about this setup.

My scanner only supports FTP. Is that OK?

Yes. You can enable plain FTP per server. Use a dedicated user per device with only the permissions it needs.

Which port do devices connect to?

Each server has its own port, shown in the dashboard. Most devices let you set the port next to the host name.

Can my Synology or QNAP NAS send files here?

If the NAS app can push to an FTP, FTPS, SFTP or WebDAV destination with a host and port, yes. Synology Hyper Backup can back up to the server over WebDAV; turn WebDAV on in the server's settings and give the NAS its own user.

How do I get files off the server?

Download them in the web file manager or any SFTP client, or let a webhook hand each file to your app with a download link.

Can I keep camera footage forever?

Files stay until you delete them, within your plan's storage. Set a quota per camera to keep growth in check.
